Neonatology Department

The Neonatology department at the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children (CHWC), provides neonatal care to babies from the ACT and surrounding region. Centenary Hospital has more than 2500 deliveries per year and is a principal referral centre for high risk pregnancies. It is the only tertiary care neonatal unit in the region, which has a delivery population of 8000.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) consists of 12 intensive care beds and 14 Special Care Nursery (SCN) beds. The NICU is also part of a larger network of Intensive Care Units Australia wide. The unit admits up to 700 patients per year, of these 150 are of a birth weight <1500g and 40% are from outside of the ACT, either from NSW or Victoria.

The NICU and SCN are recognised as family and baby friendly environments. It is important to us that we provide the best possible care for babies and their families.

Mission Statement

The NICU and SCN provides an environment that is:

  • Developmentally appropriate
  • Family centred
  • Functional, safe and comfortable
  • Technologically up to date and able to meet future needs
